Alonissos Island Sporades Greece

In 1992, in Alonissos and the surrounding small islands, was founded the National Marine Park of Alonissos and North Sporades for the protection of the seal monachus-monachus one of the most infrequent mammals of the Mediterranean. The Marine Park is a unique biotope that apart from the protection deals also with the research and the care of the Mediterranean seal and other species.

 

  

In Zone A
Permitted Activities:

·   Research with special permission and provisions.

·   Surveillance, guarding, monitoring, research and management activities implemented by the Management Body Authority.

·   Agricultural activities with traditional methods, as long as the relevant permits have been obtained and with special provisions and restrictions outlined above.

·   Livestock breeding and grazing with traditional methods as long as the relevant permits have been obtained and with special provisions and restrictions outlined above.

·   Coastal and Middle (small and large scale) professional fishing with specific restrictions outlined above.

·   Amateur fishing (only with fishing lines) with specific restrictions outlined above.

·   In areas where approaching and anchoring is permitted, only during anchoring procedures, landing is allowed.

·   The entry of pleasure boats, transport of passengers and recreational activities (swimming, snorkelling, underwater observation, amateur photography and filming, walking, landing, staying overnight, wildlife observation) as long as the relevant permits have been obtained and with special provisions and restrictions outlined above.

Forbidden Activities:

·   Hunting, except on the island of Gioura and only with special permit.

·   Free camping and the lighting of fires anywhere on terrestrial ground.

·   Scuba diving.

·   Shell and sponge fishing.

·   Collection/gathering of animals and plants.

·   Spear-gun fishing.

·   To surpass the 10 knots limit with a vessel, within 0.5 nautical mile from the islands’ coast (where approach is permitted).

·   The passage of tankers carrying more than 500 tonnes of oil and of any vessels carrying hazardous or/and toxic cargo. 

More specifically:
Island of Piperi (Zone A1) (the core of the NMPANS)
Permitted Activities:

·   Research with special permission and provisions.

·   Maintenance of the existing church, houses and spring.

·   Livestock breeding with traditional methods as long as the relevant permits have been obtained and with special provisions and restrictions.

Forbidden Activities:

·   The approach of any vessel within 3 nautical miles from the coast of the island with the exception of the vessels used for the above mentioned permitted activities.

Island of Psathura (A2) 
Permitted Activities:

·   Research with special permission and provisions.

·   The approach and mooring of pleasure and passenger boats is permitted between sunrise and sunset and only at Mantraki bay. Visitors are allowed to go ashore and use the beach within a zone of 50 metres from the shore.  Swimming, snorkelling, underwater observation, amateur photography and filming, walking and wildlife observation are the permitted recreational activities.

·   Maintenance of the existing lighthouse and the relevant infrastructure.

·   The approach, mooring and overnight stay (onboard) of professional fishing vessels (Coastal and Middle) at any place around the island.

·   Coastal (small scale) professional fishing according to the national fishing regulations and the specific provisions of NMPANS fishing regulations (fishing gear and fishing period restrictions).  

Forbidden Activities:

·   Fishing with Middle fishing vessels within a distance from the island’s coast, 1.5 nautical mile for the “gri-gri” boats and 2 nautical miles for the “trata” vessels.

·   Amateur fishing within a 1.5 nautical mile distance from the island’s coast.

·   Free camping and the lighting of fires.

Island of Gioura (A3)
Permitted Activities:

·   Research with special permission and provisions

·   Maintenance of the existing houses belonging to the Forest Authority and the relevant infrastructure.

·   Management by the Ministry of Agriculture of the island's livestock.

·   Coastal (small scale) professional fishing according to the national fishing regulations and the specific provisions of NMPANS fishing regulations (fishing gear and fishing period restrictions). 

·   The approach, mooring and overnight stay (onboard) of professional fishing vessels (only coastal) at any place around the island with the exception of Pnigmenos bay.

·   When the visit to the Cyclope's Cave will be allowed, the approach and mooring of the pleasure and passenger boats will be permitted between sunrise and sunset at Megali Vala and Sikies landing points. Passengers will be allowed only to visit the Cave.

Forbidden Activities:

·   Fishing with Middle fishing vessels within a distance from the island's coast, 1.5 nautical mile for the "gri-gri" boats and 2 nautical miles for the "trata" vessels.

·   Free camping and the lighting of fires.

·   The approach and mooring of the pleasure and passenger boats.

·   Amateur fishing within a 0.5 nautical mile distance from the island's coast.

Island of Kyra Panagia (Zone A4)
Permitted Activities:

·   Research with special permission and provisions.

·   Agricultural activities with traditional methods, as long as the relevant permits have been obtained and with special provisions and restrictions.

·   Livestock breeding and grazing with traditional methods as long as the relevant permits have been obtained and with special provisions and restrictions.

·   The approach and mooring of the pleasure and passenger boats is permitted between sunrise and sunset at Monastiri bay. Visitors are allowed to go ashore and visit the Panagia Monastery.  They are allowed to use only the path which leads from the bay to the Monastery. Overnight stay at the Monastery is allowed only with the consent of the Monastery residents.

·   The approach and mooring of the pleasure and passenger boats are permitted at Agios Petros and Planitis bays. Visitors are not allowed to go ashore (only during anchoring procedures landing is permitted). Overnight stay (onboard) is allowed. Swimming, snorkelling, underwater observation, amateur photography and filming, and wildlife observation are the permitted recreational activities.

·   Maintenance of the existing Monasteries and houses and the relevant infrastructure.

·   Coastal (small scale) professional fishing according to the national fishing regulations and the specific provisions of NMPANS fishing regulations (fishing gear and fishing period restrictions) with the exception of the area between the Vromopigada bay and the South end of the North West Coast of Fagrou Island.

·   The approach, mooring and overnight stay (onboard) of professional fishing vessels (only coastal) at any place around the island.

·   The approach, mooring and overnight stay (onboard) of professional fishing vessels (Middle fishing vessels) only at Agios Petros and Planitis bays.

·   Amateur fishing (only with fishing lines).

Forbidden Activities:

·   Fishing with Middle fishing vessels within a distance from the island’s coast, 1.5 nautical mile for the “gri-gri” boats and 2 nautical miles for the “trata” vessels.

·   Free camping and the lighting of fires.

·   Amateur fishing within a 1/3 nautical mile distance from the coast between Fagrou island and Katergo cape.

Island of Skantzura (Zone A5)
Permitted Activities:

·   Research with special permission and provisions.

·   Agricultural activities with traditional methods, as long as the relevant permits have been obtained and with special provisions and restrictions.

·   Livestock breeding and grazing with traditional methods as long as the relevant permits have been obtained and with special provisions and restrictions.

·   The approach and mooring of the pleasure and passenger boats is permitted between sunrise and sunset at Limani bay. Visitors are allowed to go ashore and use the beach. Overnight stay (onboard) is allowed. Swimming, snorkelling, underwater observation, amateur photography and filming, and wildlife observation are the permitted recreational activities.

·   Maintenance of the existing Monastery.

·   Coastal (small scale) professional fishing according to the national fishing regulations and the specific provisions of NMPANS fishing regulations (fishing gear and fishing period restrictions).

·   The approach, mooring and overnight stay (onboard) of professional fishing vessels (coastal and Middle fishing) at any place around the island.

·   Amateur fishing (only with fishing lines).

Forbidden Activities:

·   Fishing with Middle fishing vessels within a distance from the island's coast, 1.5 nautical mile for the "gri-gri" boats and 2 nautical miles for the "trata" vessels.

·   Free camping and the lighting of fires.

Islets of Korakas, Skantili, Polemika (Zone A6)
Permitted Activities:

·   Research with special permission and provisions.

·   Coastal (small scale) professional fishing according to the national fishing regulations and the specific provisions of NMPANS fishing regulations (fishing gear and fishing period restrictions).

·   The approach, mooring and overnight stay (onboard) of professional fishing vessels (coastal and Middle fishing) at any place around the island.

·   Amateur fishing (only with fishing lines).

Forbidden Activities:

·   Fishing with Middle fishing vessels within a distance from the island's coast, 1.5 nautical mile for the "gri-gri" boats and 2 nautical miles for the "trata" vessels.

·   Free camping and the lighting of fires.

·   The approach and mooring of the pleasure and passenger boats.

The rest of Zone A islets and rocks (Zone A7)
Permitted Activities:

·   Research with special permission and provisions.

·   Agricultural activities with traditional methods, as long as the relevant permits have been obtained and with special provisions and restrictions.

·   Livestock breeding and grazing with traditional methods as long as the relevant permits have been obtained and with special provisions and restrictions.

·   The approach and mooring of the pleasure and passenger boats between sunrise and sunset. Visitors are allowed to go ashore. Visiting the Panagia church on the Papou islet is allowed. Swimming, snorkelling, underwater observation, walking, amateur photography and filming, and wildlife observation are the permitted recreational activities.

·   Coastal (small scale) professional fishing according to the national fishing regulations and the specific provisions of NMPANS fishing regulations (fishing gear and fishing period restrictions).

·   The approach, mooring and overnight stay (onboard) of professional fishing vessels (coastal and Middle fishing) at any place around the island.

·   Amateur fishing (only with fishing lines).

Forbidden Activities:

·   Fishing with Middle fishing vessels within a distance from the island’s coast, 1.5 nautical mile for the “gri-gri” boats and 2 nautical miles for the “trata” vessels.

·   Free camping and the lighting of fires.

The Pagos reef (Zone A8)
Permitted Activities:

·   Research with special permission and provisions.

·   Coastal (small scale) professional fishing according to the national fishing regulations and the specific provisions of NMPANS fishing regulations (fishing gear and fishing period restrictions).

Forbidden Activities:

·   Fishing with Middle fishing vessels within one nautical mile radius from the reef's higher point.

·   Amateur fishing within one nautical mile radius from the reef's higher point.

The rest of Zone A sea area (Zone A9)
Permitted Activities:

·   Research with special permission and provisions.

·   Coastal (small scale) professional fishing according to the national fishing regulations and the specific provisions of NMPANS fishing regulations (fishing gear and fishing period restrictions).

·   Amateur fishing (only with fishing lines).

·   The entry of pleasure boats and transport of passengers. Vessels can exceed the 10 knots speed limit when they keep a distance of more than 0.5 nautical mile from the island's coast.

·   Fishing with Middle fishing vessels within a distance from the island's coast, 1.5 nautical mile for the "gri-gri" boats and 2 nautical miles for the "trata' vessels.

Zone B
Permitted Activities:

·   Research with special permission and provisions.

·   Surveillance, guarding, monitoring, research and management activities implemented by the Management Body Authority.

·   Agricultural activities when practised according to the national legislation with the exception of the below mentioned activities into zones B1, B2 and B3.

·   Livestock breeding and grazing when practised according to the national legislation with the exception of the below mentioned activities into zones B1, B2 and B3.

·   Coastal (small scale) professional fishing according to the national fishing regulations and the specific provisions of NMPANS fishing regulations (fishing gear and fishing period restrictions).

·   Fishing with Middle fishing vessels according to the national fishing regulations and the specific provisions of NMPANS fishing regulations (distance restrictions from the islands coast).

·   Amateur fishing (with fishing lines) and according to the regulations in force for the Greek seas.

·   All types of recreational activities according to the national legislation.

·   All other human activities according to the national legislation with the exception of below mentioned activities into zones B1, B2, B3 and B4.

Forbidden Activities:

·   Free camping anywhere on terrestrial ground.

·   The passage of tankers carrying more than 500 tonnes of oil and any other essels carrying hazardous or/and toxic cargo.

In Zone B1 (CapeKalamos - Amoni cape within a 200 metres distance from the coast)     
Permitted Activities:

·   Coastal (small scale) professional fishing according to the national fishing regulations and the specific provisions of NMPANS fishing regulations (fishing gear and fishing period restrictions).

·   Amateur fishing (with fishing lines) and according to the regulations in force for the Greek seas.

·   The approach, passage and mooring of coastal fishing, pleasure and passenger boats.

Forbidden Activities:

·   The approach and passage of Middle fishing vessels.

·   To surpass the 10 knots limit with a vessel, within 200 metres from the coast

In Zone B2 (Gerakas bay)
Permitted Activities:

·   Mild (non intensive) agriculture and livestock breeding.

·   Maintenance and extension of the existing infrastructure and the operation of Gerakas Research Centre and Gerakas fishing shelter.

In Zone  B3 (Broader Gerakas bay)
Permitted Activities:

·   Mild (non intensive) agriculture and livestock breeding. Any changes on applied methods are subject to Environmental Impact Assessment.

·   The construction of houses and relevant infrastructure with special restrictions.

In zone B4 (The rest of the terrestrial and sea area of the Zone B)
Permitted Activities:

·   All types of human activities according to the national legislation with the exception of infrastructure and large construction

activities which are subject to special permission and approval.
